Introduction to CoolSculpting

Stubborn fat deposits are a common occurrence in many, and can be hard to shift with exercise and healthy diet alone. A lot of people suffer with this issue, due to the natural distribution of fat cells. Some areas will have more fat cells than others, therefore making it more difficult to shift unwanted fat in these areas.

It is understandable why many would rather not undergo surgery though, as it can be uncomfortable and rather extreme if it is just a small pocket of fat you wish to budge. Equally, we understand that many would rather avoid excessive amounts of downtime. Therefore, we have explored further non-surgical options as an alternative, in order to give our patients as much choice as possible.

What is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting by Zeltiq is an FDA-cleared procedure which adopts cryolipolysis technology to cool unwanted fatty deposits beneath the skin, providing safe and effective body sculpting and fat reduction. Cryolipolysis is a fantastic liposuction alternative that enables us to freeze your fat, which your body then naturally processes and flushes out from the body.

Although the pack is applied directly onto the skin, the surface is left unaffected by treatment and remains in tact. The added Freeze Detect® setting on the device allows our expert clinicians to monitor the temperatures of the applicator, to ensure safe delivery of the treatment, and makes sure temperatures never drop or exceed the correct settings needed.

With a 95% patient satisfaction rate, this is a popular treatment which delivers effective results to get rid of belly fat. There are numerous benefits of having CoolSculpting body sculpting treatment, though, not just the great results. The elimination of surgery, anaesthesia and excessive downtime, as well as the longevity of the effects of treatment, also appeal to many.

How many sessions will I need, and how far apart can I have them?

Each individual is different, and the amount of cryolipolysis cycles needed depends not only on the surface area treated, but also the amount of fat within the area and the desired result. During a thorough consultation with one of our aestheticians, your suitability for treatment will be assessed, and you will receive a personal treatment plan outlining the number of cycles recommended for a visible result, and the exact pricing associated with the treatment. Course options will be discussed upon consultation.

Am I a suitable candidate?

This treatment is ideal for those who carry small pockets of stubborn fat, that would be looking for an effective alternative to liposuction. It is not a substitute for healthy diet and exercise, nor is it suitable for those who are obese or who have dense pockets of fat. It is a non-surgical option, as opposed to liposuction or minimally-invasive fat dissolving treatments.

Who will perform the treatment?

Your initial consultation will be carried out by our expert Aestheticians. Having undergone extensive training with Zeltiq, and having already performed many procedures since we introduced the device at PHI Clinic, they are fully-trained and highly-skilled at delivering CoolSculpting.

During the consultation process, the Aesthetician will outline your suitability for treatment, as well as go through our various fat reduction options. They will consult you based on your individual requirements and indication, and go through how many cycles you would ideally need for your desired result.

Beyond consultation, our administrative staff can then assist with scheduling the treatment, which will be based on the number of cycles suggested by the clinician. A consultation is essential in order to provide those guidelines, as some areas take longer than others, and some patients require more intense treatment in that area than others. We offer a bespoke service based on this.

On the day, you will see the same Aesthetician who carried out your consultation, who will place on the applicators and position the device for optimum results. They will ensure you are comfortable and they will be on call if ever you need them, carrying around a pager device.

The treatment room is equipped with a television set and music player to keep you entertained during the procedure. As we have a dual system, treatment time is dramatically reduced.

Is there any downtime?

How many CoolSculpting procedures have been performed worldwide, and are there clinical studies to back it?

To date, there have been more than 140,000 procedures performed worldwide since its release in 2009. The clinical studies supporting the treatment date as far back as May 2006, which prove the efficacy and safety of the procedure.

Is the cryolipolysis painful?

Relatively speaking, CoolSculpting is on the lower end of the scale in terms of pain, compared with other fat reduction treatments. It is non-invasive, meaning less downtime than surgical fat reduction, and no scars post-treatment.

Patients have reported a slight tugging sensation as the applicator is first set on the area, but this subsides shortly after the cooling process starts.

In terms of downtime, patients may experience some swelling, mild bruising, redness and sensitivity in the area, but these are temporary side-effects and are not the case with every patient.

Are there any serious side-effects?

In only approximately 50 reported cases out of 115,000 have patients reported severe pain. In all cases, these patients have stated that the pain has subsided over time.
