The term ‘ anti wrinkle injections ’ can encompass multiple types of injectable based treatment, including botulinum toxin and dermal fillers. These injections are both straightforward to perform and maintain, and achieve similar results, but they do have their differences. There seems to be misconceptions about both fillers and Botox® in the public eye; they can become conflated as the same, or mislabelled ‘cosmetic surgery.’
Neither of these ideas are correct, and they can cause confusion for those seeking out cosmetic treatments for wrinkle reduction. Surgical procedures involve cutting, suturing, removing, or changing parts of the body and its tissue, whereas these non-surgical treatments simply involve the introduction of product into skin via a needle.
Botox® anti wrinkle injections
Botox® is a brand name for botulinum toxin, and these anti wrinkle injections are primarily used for softening fine lines across the face, often referred to as wrinkle relaxers. This is down to how they work, as they are injected into the muscle beneath the targeted line and work to reduce the movement of the muscle so that overlying skin appears smooth. Results from Botox® are visible at around 5-7 days following treatment, and last for 3-4 months.
At PHI, we believe in the value of under treating an indication initially, so as not to cause a frozen or fake look, offering top ups at follow up consultations if lines are still visible.
Dermal filler injections
Dermal fillers work differently, creating volume rather than affecting the muscle. This makes them the ideal treatment for deeper lines and furrows that are visible even when the face is still, as the hyaluronic acid (HA) based formula of Juvederm products retains water to plump or fill the targeted wrinkles. Results are noticeable immediately after treatment, but improve over the course of a few days as swelling goes down and the HA settles.
Juvederm products are known for their longevity, lasting up to 24 months in certain places, though this does vary depending on lifestyle factors and areas of expression.
