Can Botox® Treatment Be Used To Add Volume?

botox treatment add volume

There’s a lot of publicity and excitement surrounding Botox treatment in the media, both positive and negative, which means that there are naturally going to be some misconceptions. These are usually greater for Botox® than for anything else, due to its cosmetic nature and the way tabloid papers and magazines cover these treatments. A common question about this injectable-based procedure is whether the product can add volume into areas of the face.

The direct answer is no. Botox® is a neurotoxin that can be applied to temporarily relax specific muscles for both cosmetic and medical purposes, not a filler product, so should never be used to add volume to the face.

Dermal fillers or Botox treatment?

Botox® and dermal fillers are two separate entities, but are so often used in conjunction with one another that it can be easy to conflate or confuse them.

When should I have a Botox treatment?

Botox® (a brand name for botulinum toxin type A), as mentioned, is a muscle relaxer, so works best for fine lines and wrinkles that occur during expression, rather than static lines, visible even when the face is at rest. Botox® is approved for us all over the face, to reduce the appearance of frown lines, forehead lines, crow’s feet next to the eyes, as well as gummy smile, cobbled chin, excessive sweating, and wide jaw.

When should I have fillers?

Dermal fillers are formulated for the revolumisation of areas of the face, and can be used to fill in static wrinkles, that may not be smoothed using Botox® alone. They can also be employed for adding volume into specific areas to create the appearance of a straighter nose, stronger chin, more defined cheekbones, and plumper lips.
