A common request we get from patients is for a skin boost, as so many people want the glowing skin we have come to associate with youth. Having great skin is dependent on both intrinsic and extrinsic factors, as almost everything we do can have consequences for our skin, both negative and positive. So what can you do to get glowing skin?
Skin Health Factors
Firstly, we need to understand what intrinsic and extrinsic factors can damage skin, as it is important to limit things that can be detrimental to our health. Our skin is the largest organ we have, so it’s vital to take care of it by reducing damaging factors and improving the way we treat it.
Intrinsic factors are those that cannot be controlled, as genetic predisposition determines how quickly your collagen and elastin levels will fall over the course of your life. Extrinsic factors are outside influences, and can be controlled throughout our lives, including UV exposure, smoking, drinking, and diet.
Ingredients For Glowing Skin
What can you do to get glowing skin?
Our clinicians recommend seeking skin products that contain the following ingredients for their qualities in refreshing skin.
This is a Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHS), known for its ability to reduce redness and decrease inflammation. It works by exfoliating inside hair follicles to remove built up dirt and skin cells from pores. It’s anti-inflammatory properties are used in lots of skincare products like face washes and exfoliants, but should not be used too often as it can be quite drying.
AHA is short for Alpha Hydroxy Acid, and includes products like glycolic acid, and lactic acid. AHAs are effective in treating acne, as they dry out spots, blackheads and whiteheads, and cause the top layer to peel off. This refines pores, removes dead cells, and improves skin texture.
Vitamins For Glowing Skin
Topical Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, is a universally recognised powerful skincare ingredient. It can be used to protect the skin against free radicals, smooth fine lines and restore your natural glow and it acts like a shield to keep your skin free from pollutants and environmental factors. It is an antioxidant, and helps the structure of skin as well as promoting collagen production.
Also known as Niacin or niacinamide, Vitamin B3 is another anti-inflammatory that can help to refresh and even out skin tone. It promotes healing, reduces wrinkles, and can be used in products to reduce problems like rosacea in a less harsh manner than AHAs.
Retinol, or Vitamin A, has multiple anti-ageing properties, making it a go to ingredient for lots of skincare products. It helps skin by improving cell turnover, and reduces signs of ageing as well as diminishing fine lines and wrinkles. It can also be used to improve skin tone and areas of pigmentation.
Our clinicians are always working to help patients improve their skin quality, and gave their recommendations for skincare to suit different skin types.
For oily skin, we advise products like Obagi Clenziderm Cleanser, Obagi Pore Therapy, and IS Clinical Active Serum.
For dry and combination skin, the recommendations are Obagi Hydrafactor SPF, Obagi Hydrate Moisturiser, Obagi Hydrate Lux, and IS Clinical Moisture Complex.
For a complete skin assessment and bespoke skincare recommendations, you can book a consultation with one of our aesthetic therapists.
For a more intense skin treatment, we recommend Juvederm Volite. Volite is an injectable procedure that is nicknamed the ‘6 month moisturiser’ for its hydrating properties. During treatment, a HA based gel is introduced via a needle into strategic points across the face to reintroduce lost moisture.
HA is hyaluronic acid, a water-attracting sugar that occurs naturally in skin. Effects can last for up to 9 months, making it the perfect Autumn/Winter pick-me-up treatment for glowing skin.
For those who want a quick glowing skin fix but wish to avoid needles, the Beauti-PHI Peel is a facial treatment performed by our aesthetic therapists at PHI that can boost your natural glow. It uses diamond tipped microdermabrasion, topical serums, and optional LED light treatment to improve skin quality, texture, and tone in one 45 minute session. The Beauti-PHI Peel can be used as a one off treatment before a big event or as a regular facial for continued results.
You can find more information about how the Beauti-PHI Peel works on our Instagram highlights.
