Lip augmentation is a hot topic at the moment, with more and more men and women of all ages opting for the treatment. Whether you’re looking at having a lip filler treatment yourself or just want to find out more about this popular non-surgical intervention, we’ve put together the most important information you’ll need to know.
Lip augmentation products and results
While there are many types of fillers out there, most lip augmentation treatments are performed with HA (hyaluronic acid) based products. These fillers mimic a naturally occurring sugar that attracts and retains water to add volume to the lips, and are broken down by the body over time in the same way that natural HA would be. We use Juvederm Volbella at PHI Clinic, which is specially formulated for use in the lips.
Due to the nature of these fillers, results can be seen immediately following treatment, though these will improve for a while as the HA bonds with water in your skin. Optimal results can be seen from 3-4 weeks post-treatment, which is when we would advise you have a follow up consultation if you have any concerns.
Lip augmentation longevity and aftercare
Juvederm dermal fillers last in the lips for up to 24 months, though this will vary depending on how quickly your body breaks down the HA related to metabolism and expression. While results may fade, the filler has ongoing benefits for collagen and elastin (vital proteins that provide strength) in your skin.
While the product settles after lip augmentation treatment, we would always recommend that you avoid strenuous exercise, drinking alcohol, and having facials for up to 48 hours. Your clinician will always take you through this information in your consultation and treatment, and can answer any aftercare questions you might have.
Your lip augmentation
One of the most common worries we hear at PHI Clinic is that patients don’t want their lips to look overdone or ‘fake,’ and often think that you can always tell when someone has had lip fillers. While this is partly true, and you can tell when people have had lip fillers, it is usually in cases where results are not natural, and it is important to remember that subtle results are ignored precisely because you can’t tell there has been any work done at all.
We pride ourselves on natural results, and always prefer to under treat in an initial procedure and then top up in later consultations to maintain subtle, effective changes.
