As we age, we all notice the changes that appear on the face, from fine lines and wrinkles to sagging skin. Changes in the cheek area in particular can have a profound effect on the way the face looks, which can need treatment in order to restore natural cheek volume.
What causes loss of cheek volume?
Collagen and elastin in the face break down over time, which leads to skin laxity, and muscles sag downwards under the weight of skin and fat. Sun damage, smoking, drinking, and having a high sugar diet can all exacerbate this, having the effect of reducing elasticity in the midface.
Periods of extreme or sudden weight loss in which the skin is not given the opportunity to shrink back when fat is lost can also cause this. The facial proportions that we typically associate with youth change throughout these transitions, creating sunken cheeks, a pronounced tear trough and jowling.
Restore natural cheek volume using dermal fillers
In order to reduce this sagging, we use dermal fillers to restore natural cheek volume. The products we use, the Juvederm Vycross range by Allergan, are hyaluronic acid based fillers, which attract and retain up to 1000 times their weight in water, leading to a prolonged plumpness.
By introducing product into specific areas of the face, our doctors can revolumise the cheeks, the effects of which can last up to 24 months. This can also have the added bonus of improving the appearance of the tear trough, reducing the tired look that occurs below the eyes when the cheeks sag.
We see dermal fillers as an ongoing treatment at PHI Clinic, and recommend top ups every 18-24 months. You can get in touch with us on 0207 034 5999 if you have any questions, and our friendly team will be more than happy to help.
