Vaginal laxity is a common concern for most women, which is traditionally associated as a result of childbirth. However over time, ageing can equally cause muscle relaxation contributing towards loosening the vagina. Muscles relax as a result from collagen fibres in the vaginal wall diminishing as we age.
Whilst not a life threatening concern, tissue laxity can create urinary incontinence, as hormonal changes such as menopause can create dryness and loss of sensation, making intercourse painful and less pleasurable. As a result, some women seek treatments for a tightened vagina to strengthen the muscle and reduce laxity.
What is vagina tightening?
As oestrogen levels decrease over time, the muscles may become weaker and skin loses its elasticity, with many women beginning to notice laxity everywhere, including in intimate areas.
Vaginal tightening aims to reconstruct and rebuild the pelvic floor to strengthen the muscles and reduce vaginal laxity for women who have experienced severe stretching of the vaginal tissue and muscles.
This tightening can address both functional and aesthetic concerns, like external sagging, urinary stress incontinence, orgasmic dysfunction, and more.
Surgery for a tightened vagina
Previously, those seeking treatment for a tightened vagina would find that the only long lasting treatment is the surgical route of vaginoplasty. Vaginoplasty aims to reconstruct and rebuild the pelvic floor by bringing together the separated muscles; extra mucosa skin from the back side of the vagina is also taken out, and external skin can be removed for aesthetic appearance.
However, with a surgical procedure, one to two weeks of downtime is required as this can make you feel sore and achy for the first few days. Patients are advised that aftercare includes no tampon use or intercourse for around 8 weeks.
Do I need surgery to get a tightened vagina?
Unlike vaginoplasty, ThermiVa is a non-invasive procedure with little downtime required and is almost entirely pain free as anaesthesia is not required throughout treatment. ThermiVa is a radio-frequency energy treatment used to rejuvenate and restructure vaginal and vulvar skin by increasing collagen to minimise skin sag.
Through radio-frequency technology, the temperature of the tissue is raised to encourage ongoing collagen growth and restructuring tissue, whilst increasing blood flow to the vaginal tissues. The ThermiVa machine itself, is a thin probe attached to a wand that delivers targeted energy. This device gently heats tissues inside and outside to encourage a regenerative healing process.
At PHI Clinic, we work with you on producing a treatment plan specifically tailored towards your individual needs and concerns to ensure a tightened vagina. Whilst results are noticeable after the first treatment, ThermiVa is regarded as a maintenance procedure that may require treatment every 12-18 months following an initial three-session course to see continued results.
