We are often asked the question “What is Botox?” Botulinum toxin type A is a purified protein which is used in medicine for a range of purposes, including hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and cerebral palsy. For over twenty years, it has also been adopted in aesthetic medicine to treat fine lines and wrinkles.
What is Botox?
As we age, fine lines and wrinkles form on our faces. There are two types of wrinkles and lines; those which are expressive (visible when we smile, laugh, talk, etc.) and those which are static (there even when we are relaxing our faces).
Botox injections can be used to maintain and reduce the appearance of these furrows, and can also be used earlier on to prevent them from deepening.
What is Botox?
Botox is a purified protein that is injected into a target area to relax a muscle. The product is called botulinum toxin type A, and Botox is a brand name, manufactured by Allergan.
How does Botox work?
Our muscles contract when the nerve endings send messages to our brain. Anti-wrinkle injections block this message going to the brain, therefore relaxing the muscle. This stops us overworking them and forming new wrinkles and deepening existing ones. Botox lasts between 3-4 months and is considered an ongoing maintenance treatment.

PHI Clinic is a multi award-winning cosmetic practice on Harley Street, London, owned by Dr Tapan Patel. Dr Tapan has been in aesthetic medicine for over 17 years and has been a medical doctor for over 21 years. In this time he has built up a vast patient base, teaching other doctors and medical practitioners his advanced dermal filler and Botox techniques.
Dr Tapan has hand-selected our clinical staff, including his fellow injectors, Mr Apul Parikh, Dr Nestor Demosthenous, Nurse Samantha Knuckey, Nurse Sarah Gaughan and Dr Johanna Ward. Patients are initially invited for a consultation and full facial assessment. This allows the doctor to go through exactly what you desire from treatment, what results can be expected from treatment, your suitability for the procedure, Botox costs and any further questions you might have about the treatment before going ahead.
Treatment itself is relatively quick and simple, but never rushed. Every patient is seen on an individual basis, with a bespoke treatment plan tailored to suit personal requirements.
