Can You Treat Laughter Lines?

laughter-lines-Botox-PHI-Clinic-London 1920x1280

When we age, the area around the mouth starts to crease and form laughter lines. This stands to reason when you think of all the times you’ve smiled, laughed, kissed, smoked (perhaps) and talked.

Revered author, Mark Twain, said: “wrinkles should merely indicate where smiles have been.” While I agree with him, I think we should be able to make little tweaks to keep us looking as good as we feel.

Age is not something that should be shunned or shied away from. It is a fact of life, and we are all inevitably going to wear the signs at some point. However, if ageing starts to impact your confidence and self-esteem, there is no reason not to take action to prevent or delay these.

Botulinum Toxin for laughter lines

One of the most popular anti-wrinkle treatments in the world is botulinum toxin (Botox), which can temporarily reduce laughter lines. Botox injections have been used in the cosmetic setting to safely combat signs of ageing for nearly 20 years.

Botox is FDA-approved for use on crow’s feet, forehead lines and frown lines. Results last approximately 3-4 months and treatment is seen as ongoing. Botulinum toxin injections are a prescription-only medicine (POM) in the UK, so we always require a consultation to determine whether you are suitable.

While the name itself may seem daunting, the key is to see a skilled and experienced practitioner. We recommend that you only visit a medically trained clinician, like a doctor, dentist, or nurse.

Dermal Filler Treatment

If Botox doesn’t appeal to you, or you have very mild smile lines, dermal fillers can be an alternative treatment option. Equally, you may attend a consultation with an interest in Botox treatment and our clinicians may suggest a different option for addressing laughter lines.

At PHI Clinic, we use Juvederm Vycross fillers, which contain hyaluronic acid, or HA. This is an ubiquitous substance that occurs naturally in skin and tissue, meaning it does not cause reactions and gels with existing tissue.

HA attracts and retains up to 1000 times its own weight in water and has been used in aesthetics for nearly 15 years. When targeting the fine lines beside the eyes, we would use a runny gel filler like Volite to hydrate the skin without creating volume.

Alternatives To Injectables

For those who wish to avoid injectables altogether, device-based treatments may be a better option to reduce the appearance of laugh lines. At PHI Clinic, we have a large range of lasers and devices to be able to offer our patients a variety of options.

Technologies like HIFU, or high intensity focussed ultrasound, apply ultrasound technology to encourage the production of collagen. This restores strength to the skin and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Thermal energy can also be harnessed; the Tixel uses a ‘controlled wound’ to improve the texture, tone, and elasticity of skin. The Tixel can be used right up to the delicate lash line, making it a good choice for laughter lines by the eyes.

A combination of radiofrequency and microneedling, in the form of the Secret RF, is another option for treating crow’s feet or laughter lines. This treatment uses thermal energy (radiofrequency) to increase circulation and a controlled wound (microneedling) to encourage growth factors and stimulate collagen production.

Our clinicians may recommend different courses of action for different patients, depending on your needs, preferences, budget, and availability for downtime. Consultation is a key part of any journey here at PHI Clinic, so we can determine which treatments are the most suitable for your needs. One of my favourite authors of all time, Mark Twain, said: “wrinkles should merely indicate where smiles have been.” Whilst I agree with him whole-heartedly, I do feel that we should be able to make little tweaks and corrections as we go along, in order to keep us looking as good as we feel.

One of the most popular anti-wrinkle treatments in the world is botulinum toxin, which temporarily relaxes the muscles to help reduce the appearance of those mischievous laughter lines. Its use is extremely prevalent in the US, with over 4 million patients undergoing treatment every year.

Whilst the name itself may seem daunting – the idea of putting any foreign product into the body is always going to be a little scary – it is in fact no more dangerous than taking a paracetamol. The other benefit to having this treatment, is that it is temporary; if you are wanting to make a slight or subtle change, but aren’t ready to undergo surgery, it is ideal.
