Introduction To MiraDry
MiraDry works by delivering precisely controlled electromagnetic energy to the underarm area, eliminating the underarm sweat glands. Two procedures are typically recommended, 3 months apart, to maximise the quality and duration of results.
While sweating is an essential body function for temperature-control, the underarms house less than 2% of the body’s sweat glands, and miraDry is completely safe.

Technical Information
miraDry is a safe, clinically proven, FDA-cleared solution for significantly reducing underarm sweat. It’s an outpatient procedure that doesn’t involve any surgical incisions or cuts. Each appointment generally lasts about an hour.
This is the only FDA-cleared procedure that provides a lasting reduction of underarm sweat in a completely non-invasive way. Other treatment options, including antiperspirants and toxins, aim to temporarily disable the sweat glands for varying lengths of time – requiring repeat treatments to maintain effectiveness.

The safety data from the multiple clinical studies in the UK to effectively treat under-arm hyperhidrosis has been reported as very good.
Common side effects include mild to moderate temporary swelling and discomfort in the treatment area lasting about one week. Mild numbness or altered sensation of the skin in the underarm area can last several months, but will subside.
miraDry is indicated for sufferers of excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, though we do see patients who do not have this condition and wish to reduce their underarm sweat.

We recommend that most patients require 2 sessions, approximately 3 months apart, for optimal results, though this may vary from person to person.
There are three steps to the procedure:
- Your underarm is numbed with local anesthesia.
- The miraDry handpiece is placed on the underarm and a vacuum suction draws the sweat glands closer to the surface to protect deeper tissue. Non-invasive energy is delivered through the skin which penetrates the sweat glands eliminating them.At the same time, a cooling system protects the skin and keeps the heat energy at the targeted area of the sweat glands, so patient comfort is assured throughout the procedure.
- You will experience a significant reduction in underarm sweat and odour after just one treatment with miraDry. Studies have shown that miraDry will cause, on average, an 80% long term reduction in underarm sweating from baseline levels. If you do not get the results that you were hoping for after one treatment, a second treatment can be undertaken at any point in the future after 3 months. At PHI you will be offered a review at this point so we can discuss the results and the need for any further treatment.
