Age spots and pigmentation: what you need to know

Uneven pigmentation and age spots are caused by abnormal distribution of melanin, the pigment responsible for the colour of our skin. Melanin is produced in the skin’s outer layer by specialist cells called melanocytes. If these cells are damaged or unhealthy, melanin production is affected.

Many pigmentation disorders are a consequence of ageing and sun damage. As we age, our skin naturally loses its ability to regenerate and repair itself. UV exposure accelerates this process. The melanocytes can become unevenly distributed, which leads to irregular deposits of melanin in the skin.

These irregular deposits can appear as larger patches of discoloured skin or as age spots. Age spots, also known as liver spots or solar lentigines, can be as small as a freckle, or up to half an inch in diameter. They are usually found on areas of the body that have been exposed to sun, such as the shoulders, hands, face and arms.

What causes age spots?

People with light skin and red hair are more likely to develop age spots and patchy pigmentation, as are those who have a history of overexposure to the sun, repeated sunburn and/or sunbed use. Genetics play a part too; you are more likely to have or develop age spots if a close member of your family has them.

Hormones can also trigger uneven pigmentation. Melasma, commonly known as ‘the mask of pregnancy’, affects around 90% of pregnant women, although men can develop the condition as well. Melasma affects the upper lips, nose, cheekbones and forehead, creating a mask-like pattern of pigmented patches.

True age spots and pigmentation patches are not harmful to health. However they can be unsightly and have a significant impact on confidence.
