Getting rid of a double chin

A double chin is a pocket of excess fatty tissue under the jawline. This condition, also known as submental fat, does not only affect people who are overweight. It has a range of causes, including genetics, posture, diet and age, and can affect people of all ages and sizes.

A double chin can be treated with surgical options such as liposuction and a neck lift. We offer effective non-surgical alternatives to reduce the amount of fat cells in this area and tighten saggy skin. During your no obligation consultation, we'll create a bespoke treatment plan to get rid of your double chin using CoolSculpting Mini, Endolift or fat-dissolving injections. We can also carefully inject dermal filler into the skin, lifting the lower face to ultimately reduce the appearance of a double chin.

How to get rid of a double chin?

There are many ways to get rid of a double chin, including a diet change, exercise and even surgery. We use a series of revolutionary non-surgical treatments to get rid of a double chin, including the CoolSculpting Mini, Endolift and fat-dissolving injections. To reduce the appearance of a double chin, we can also carefully inject dermal filler to lift and rejuvenate the skin.

CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is an FDA-approved treatment which freezes and destroys fat cells. This technology is also known as cryolipolysis. CoolSculpting Mini is a version of the treatment specifically designed to spot-reduce smaller pockets of fat. It is particularly effective for treating the area under the chin.

When used to treat submental fat, CoolSculpting Mini involves applying a small, specialist applicator to the double chin. This cools, freezes and destroys the fat without harming the skin. The destroyed cells are eliminated naturally by the body, shrinking the double chin over the coming weeks and months. It is usually a one-off treatment.

Endolift

Endolift is a high-tech treatment which combines skin tightening with fat removal. It is extremely well suited to treating a double chin, as it is able to reduce the fatty pocket while simultaneously tightening the jawline. It has minimal or no downtime.

An Endolift treatment involves inserting tiny optical fibres, the size of a human hair, into the skin. The fibres create micro channels through which laser energy is delivered into the hypodermis. This laser energy heats the tissue, encouraging new collagen production and tightening the skin, while also targeting fat. Results are immediate, and a single session is usually all that is needed.

Endolift treatment at PHI Clinic is offered by Dr Priya Verma, the UK’s most experienced Endolift practitioner, and medical director Dr Tapan Patel, who has been trained 1-2-1 by Dr Verma.

Dermal filler

By injecting dermal fillers into the affected area, our specialist team of doctors and nurses can restore definition to your chin and jawline. The best part is that fillers are temporary and non-surgical. Jawline and chin fillers have the power to enhance and define the structure of the lower face, reducing the appearance of a double chin.

At our London clinic, we use Juvéderm dermal fillers that contain hyaluronic acid, a  hydrating substance that occurs naturally in your body. By injecting these fillers, we can effectively replenish lost volume and give your skin a lift exactly where it's needed.

What causes a double chin?

Genetics. Fat distribution can be hereditary, up to a point. Your genes can influence how and where your body stores fat, including the area under your jaw.

Posture. Poor posture can contribute to the development of a double chin, as it weakens the muscles in the neck, jaw and chin area. A typical example of poor posture is being hunched over a phone or computer, which can lead to 'tech neck'. As the muscles weaken, the surrounding skin loses its elasticity and can sag or droop. This causes a stubborn pocket of fat below the chin to appear.

Diet. When you regularly consume more calories than you burn, the excess is stored as fat all over the body, including the area under the neck. The foods that typically cause weight gain have a dual impact on submental fat. Not only does a diet high in sugar, processed foods, and unhealthy fats provide excess calories, it can also lead to the breakdown of collagen in the skin. The resulting skin laxity, coupled with weight gain, can worsen the appearance of a double chin.

Age. As we age, collagen and elastin synthesis in the skin naturally reduces, which leads to skin laxity. This sagging can contribute to a double chin as it creates the appearance of a fat pocket at the jawline. A double chin is therefore a sign of ageing, just like lines and wrinkles.
