Leslie Ash Speaks Out about Her Cosmetic Surgery

Participating in a two-part film by ITV’s ‘This Morning’, Leslie Ash opens up about her cosmetic surgery, stating that she did “not do [her] homework”.

Ash, well-known for her roles in the sitcom ‘Men Behaving Badly’ and her lead in ‘Quadrophenia’, opted to have lip implants back in 2002. Following her procedure, Ash has been the face of many an anti-surgery campaign, shaming her for her infamous ‘trout pout’.

If it’s gone well then they don’t want people to know that they’ve had anything done, and if it’s gone badly there’s this shame… and I know, I went through it. You feel like just hiding yourself away and never coming out. – Leslie Ash speaking to ‘This Morning’ about cosmetic procedures.

The TV show surveyed a group of 2,000 men and women, highlighting that:

  • 1 in 10 women are considering cosmetic procedures
  • 35 per cent of women stated they had already undergone a cosmetic procedure between the ages of 18 and 24
  • 1 in 3 said they would consider going abroad for their surgery

What can we learn from this?

  • It is a little-known fact that, in the UK, the cosmetic industry is largely unregulated. This means that anyone can perform cosmetic treatments on the public. This is a core issue which has served to mar the industry’s reputation, causing distrust and dissatisfaction with results.
  • While there is the government-run CQC (Care Quality Commission) that carries out routine checks and inspections on registered practices, ensuring they meet their strict codes of conduct, it is not compulsory for every practice, clinic and salon to register with them in order to treat patients.
  • Voucher sites, such as Wowcher and Groupon, host deals from Harley Street medics. The reality is; if they are offering treatments at bargain prices, there is usually something that is compromised. The costs of surgeries and treatments should factor in the price of the product and consumables, the staff and skill of the practitioner and the time it takes to carry out the procedure.
  • Discounted procedures – at home or away – do not necessarily mean you are getting a good deal for your money. Some practices cram in up to ten surgical procedures in a day. They tend to botch the job and disappear after surgery, especially if they have come over just to perform treatment. This effectively means patients can do nothing for compensation or reimbursement.
